New members please note that you pay the leader at the first session of an activity, or if you make a single attendance, you are not required to pay in advance.

Please take newspaper or a plastic sheet to protect tables and your own cleansing materials to all practical indoor sessions. No litter may be left at any venue but must be taken home.

February 2024

Monday Morning Portrait/Figure Drawing and Painting

10 – 12 am, St Peter’s Community Centre, Church Street, Old Town, TN40 2HE.

The 8 week term will resume on Monday 5th February at 10.00 am, subsequent sessions: February 12th , 19th and 26th ; March 4th 11th 18th and 25th .

All members welcome; any media may be used, help given if required. Good coffee is served at 11am. The fees are the same as last year. £42 for the 8 week term if possible or £7 for any single session. *

Bring any materials of your choice including protection for a table and floor if they are messy materials. Tea/coffee served by the centre is not included in the fees.  Fees will be £42 for all eight sessions or £7 for any single session.

There are few parking places by the Centre, in Church Street or De La Warr Road. Paid parking is available in the Manor Gardens Car Park (payment by machine (coin), phone or corner shop).  Road parking is available in Lychgates Close, north of King Offa Way if you can climb steps and have a head for heights to cross the footbridge over King Offa Way.

Volunteer models always welcome. Please ask your friends if they might like their portraits painted. There is a gift for each model.

Thursday Afternoon Life Group.

Sessions start on Thursday 8th February at 2 pm, subsequent sessions: February 15th 22nd and 29th ; March 7th 14th 21st and 28th .

There will be eight sessions altogether.

Tea and coffee will be available at break time.

The price will be £12 per session, or four sessions (not necessarily contiguous) can be bought for £40.  Please bring the correct change if paying by cash.

All BAW members are welcome.  There is no tuition, however we are a friendly, informal and supportive group.  All of our models are professionals.

We usually start with a series of short poses, then after the break we have either one long or two medium-length poses.

Open Studio Working at Bexhill Museum – second Sunday of each month.

Members can come to work and exhibit in the Education room from 11.00a.m. – 3.30 pm on the second Sunday of the month, from February to December .

Sessions will resume on Sunday February 11that 11 am. Subsequent dates are: March 10th,  April 14th,  May 12th,  June 9th,  July14th,  August 11th, September 8th,  October 13th,  November 10th  and December 8th.

We will have access from 10.30am in order to set up.

Tuesday Afternoon Workshops

2.15 – 4.15 pm at St Stephen’s Church Large Hall, Down Road. Bexhill TN39 4HD.

There will be 12 workshops altogether. The workshops will re-commence on Tuesday February 6th and continue until April 30th , with no session on April 2nd due to Easter.

The price will be £36 for all twelve sessions. Alternatively, attendance at any single workshop will be £5, and if you book for a pair of workshops the price will be £10.

Tea/coffee and biscuits available free of charge at all Tuesday workshops. Please bring your own mug.

Please bring protective clothing, paper towels, rags, newspaper to cover tables etc as necessary for  workshops.

There is a small church car park in Down Road and also parking in Newlands Avenue.

The local bus number 97 from town can deliver you to the top of West Down Road, only 200 yards from the hall for the start time, but there is no bus available for the return. Members with cars are often willing to assist with return journeys.

The nearest bus stop for the 98 bus is in London Road at the junction of London Road and Woodsgate Park, with a ten minute walk to the hall.

First session. Simple Monoprinting – drawing pictures.

We will be making simple single colour monoprints, either freehand or tracing. You don’t have to be good at drawing to get great results!

If you have them please bring the following. If not most things they can be provided or shared.

  • Water-based printing ink
  • Brayer/ink roller (preferably soft rubber e.g. speedball) (if not we can share)
  • A4 acetate sheet or smooth plastic punch pocket
  • 10+ sheets A4 smooth cartridge paper or smooth printing/watercolour card
  • Alternatively, old book pages work well to print on to
  • 10+ sheets A4 copy paper
  • Scissors
  • Coloured biro/ballpoint pen (not black)
  • Pencil

March 5th & 12th Bubble Painting with Mel

Experiment with painting bubbles – not painting all the reflections and refractions, but actually painting bubbles. Bring along watercolour or acrylic paints, paper and brushes. We’ll paint bubbles, using straws and washing-up liquid, and then think about putting them into a setting, so bring some ideas about where your bubbles might be (on the seashore, in a bath, in a champagne glass…)

Come along, have a go, and have some creative fun. 


March 19th & 26th Learn to crochet with Elaine. (postponed from the autumn.)

A workshop for members wanting to learn to crochet and for members who have some basic knowledge of the craft. Illustrated handouts showing how to crochet will be provided. Some hooks and wool/ crochet cotton will also be available. If you have your own hooks and wool please bring them with you. Books and magazines showing ideas for crochet will be available to see and also some additional members who crochet will be at the workshops to help those learning.

This day we will come together to finish the postcard exhibition entries ready for exhibition and sale at the Sailing Club Craft Fair which we hope will be on 3rd May.

Every member is asked to submit at least one wonderful, exciting, image postcard size, exclusive to this exhibition. Every item will be for sale at £5. in aid of charities (see above)

This will be the last handing in date for those entries please.

They may be handed to committee members at any previous activities or delivered to the organiser at

6, Daresbury Close TN39 4DR. There will be no submission charge.


April 30th Creative Software Demonstration with Dave

In the first part of this presentation, Dave will demonstrate that you don’t need expensive software to have creative fun with photographs.  He will demonstrate the use of some free (and freely available) Windows software that can modify photographs to produce dramatic and surreal images.

In the second half of the presentation, Dave will go online and demonstrate the use of AI software to create images from text descriptions, and explore the capabilities and limitations of current AI offerings.  In this part of the demonstration, suggestions from the participants will be welcome.

Please note – this ‘workshop’ is a demonstration, using a laptop coupled to a projector and large screen.  While Dave will explain things as clearly as possible, the demonstration will not be ‘hands on’ and will not claim to teach any of the skills needed.  There will be a handout listing the software that is being demonstrated.

Summer Drawing and Painting Outside

Join us for the fun and challenge of painting outdoors. We have put together a varied programme for our outdoor drawing and painting sessions this summer. Our venues include private gardens, parkland, woods, seascapes, walled gardens and even some ruins.

A lovely tranquil garden in the heart of Bexhill’s old town. The garden has lots of flower beds, mature trees, a pond, a walled garden with exotic plants and the ruins of the old 13th century manor house. There are lots of benches around the garden to enjoy the varied views.

Manor gardens has a car park but you now need to pay. However, the 99 bus passes the Manor gardens on route between Eastbourne and Hastings. It goes via Bexhill town centre.

May 3rd Craft Fair at the Sailing Club, 10 am ’till 4 pm

Our first exhibition of the year. This event will include a ‘mini-exhibition’ of postcard-sized works by our members, to be sold at a fixed price of £5 each, in aid of local charities ‘Warming Up the Homeless’ , St. Michael’s Hospice and the Foodbank.

Summer outdoor Drawing and Painting

TUESDAY JUNE 4th 2-4pm. WYLANDS FARM

Powdermill Lane, Battle, TN33 0SU

Wylands Farm is set in a delightful countryside setting with a woodland trail and lake. Access the farm via the long drive. The car park is by the farm shop and café. Some of us will have lunch before the painting session so if you would like to join us please meet at the café at 1pm. If you are coming just for the painting session, please meet by the lake behind the cafe at 2pm. We have been asked to respect the anglers by the lake and not set up to paint near them.

This quiet beach offers a variety of viewpoints. You can see the cliffs towards Galley Hill and there are views across to Eastbourne and Hastings. If there is a low tide, there are rock pools.

Access the beach through the railway tunnel. Please meet by the café on the beach at 2pm.

There is a car park but you do have to pay. However, the 99 bus passes Ravenside Shopping Centre on route between Eastbourne via Bexhill town centre to Hastings

Ashburnham Place is a now a Christian conference centre and retreat which opens its grounds to the public. It used to be a large country estate and the parkland, lakes and walled gardens were designed by Capability Brown. There are varied views which offer lots of opportunities for drawing or painting. It also has a wonderful cafe in the orangery. Some of us will have lunch before the painting session so if you would like to join us please meet at the Orangery at 1pm. If you are coming just for the painting session, please meet by the steps near the Orangery at 2pm.

The park consists of several meadows with mature trees and small areas of woodland. There is a good view looking towards the Highwoods Golf Club. You can access the car park nearest to the meadows by tuning off Little Common Road into Broadoak Lane. Take the first left into the park. Drive down the lane, past the allotments and the car park is on your right. Please meet at the picnic bench up the hill from the car park at 2pm.

The sessions are an opportunity to meet others, share expertise and enjoy working together. If you are a beginner don’t be afraid to come along and have a go as there will be guidance and support.

Weeks 1 & 2. 8th & 15th October
Botanical Inspiration
This session we will use Flowers, Fruit & veg to inspire you with bright autumnal colours. Bring your own watercolour, gouache or acrylic, whatever you have. Bring some plants etc. if you can and we can share what we have.

If you are a beginner, come and create a watercolour bouquet with Joy. We will look at the structure of flowers and simple ways we can draw them. We will look at how to arrange our flowers to create our watercolour bouquet. Please bring a pencil and rubber, other basic materials will be provided but if you have your own watercolour paints and brushes please bring them.

Weeks 3 & 4. 22nd & 29th October

Landscapes, Townscapes, Interiors – Please bring any images that have captivated or inspired you this summer from photos or your sketchbooks.

Any media could be used, but pastels, oil pastels, coloured pencils or watercolour pencils are suggested as they usually lead to more lively results. Bring big sheets of paper or board to work freely. Maggie will be there if you are a beginner and need help.

Our models are professionals and we are in touch with four ladies and one man, and hopefully it will be possible to organise to see each model over the five-week period. If there is a good level of support it may be possible to extend the sessions by one week.

There is no formal tuition, however we are a friendly and supportive group and can give guidance if required.
The price of room hire has risen, so unfortunately we have had to increase the price.
Venue Directions: There is a small amount of parking close to the Community Centre and in nearby De La Warr Road, and also across the footbridge in St. Peter’s Crescent. There is paid parking in Manor Barn Car Park (exact coins required): Ringo, Cash or pay in the Corner Shop in Church Street.

Autumn Craft Fair

The AUTUMN CRAFT FAIR will be held on Saturday 2nd November, at the Studio of the DLWP.

Open 10 ’till 4 pm. Admission is free.

There will be fifteen tables all displaying work crafted by local artists.

This is the ideal place to find that special Christmas gift or treat.

As well as the craft products there will be a selection of cards produced by local artists, for our ‘Charity Postcard-sized artwork sale’ in which all entries (all of which are original works of art by local artists) will be for sale at a minimum price of £3 each. The proceeds of this sale will be added to the income received from our Spring and Summer Charity Postcard sales and divided between three local charities.

Your Favourite Things.
Shiny modern machines, beautiful ceramics, much loved toys, comfortable worn garden shoes, your cat? Create an interesting/attractive image of one special thing which gives you pleasure.
Use your favourite medium or try a new one, but aim to produce a finished work in the two sessions. Maggie will be there if you are a beginner and need help.


Week 7: 19th November
Step by Step Cubism

Have fun, work in the steps of Cezanne and Picasso to produce a colourful ‘cubist style’ painting in 2 hours with Maggie.
There will be samples to see, and some objects to work from provided, but if you can each bring two everyday objects, please do so.
Bring a strong piece of paper or board minimum size A3, poster paint, gouache or acrylic paints.


Week 8: 26th November (Final Session of this season)
Macramé Christmas Trees in up to 3 designs (time depending!) with Rachel.
Please bring:

  • BAW will provide the macramé cord, or bring your own macramé cord, rattail, or any non-stretchy yarn (i.e. Cotton) in your choice of colour. The larger the cord, the easier it is to work with.
  • Reading glasses
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Optional: If you have a macramé board and T pins please bring, but not essential so don’t buy!
  • Optional: 1-2cm wooden beads or sequin stars for the top of your trees.

Sessions start on Thursday 31st October at 2 pm, subsequent sessions: November 7th 14th 21st and 28th ;

There will be five sessions altogether.

Tea and coffee will be available at break time.

The price is £60 for all 5 sessions or £15 for a single session. Please bring the correct change if paying by cash.

Our models are professionals and we are in touch with four ladies and one man, and hopefully it will be possible to organise to see each model over the five-week period. If there is a good level of support it may be possible to extend the sessions by one week.

There is no formal tuition, however we are a friendly and supportive group and can give guidance if required.
Venue Directions: There is a small amount of parking close to the Community Centre and in nearby De La Warr Road, and also across the footbridge in St. Peter’s Crescent. There is paid parking in Manor Barn Car Park (exact coins required): Ringo, Cash or pay in the Corner Shop in Church Street.

Sunday Open Studio

Open Studio Working at Bexhill Museum, Egerton Road, TN393HL. 11am – 3.30 pm, at the Education Room of the Museum, on the second Sunday of each month.

November session – 10th November. Cost: £5 per session.
We work and exhibit in the Education room from 11:00- 3:30. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided but you need to bring your own lunch.

We are always pleased to see members come and join us at the Open Studio and welcome members who just drop in to see us too.
