General Information
New members please note that you pay the leader at the first session of an activity, or if you make a single attendance, you are not required to pay in advance.
Please take newspaper or a plastic sheet to protect tables and your own cleansing materials to all practical indoor sessions. No litter may be left at any venue but must be taken home.

February 2025
Monday Morning Portrait/Figure Drawing and Painting
10 – 12 am, St Peter’s Community Centre, Church Street, Old Town, TN40 2HE.
The 8 week term will resume on Monday 3rd February at 10.00 a.m, subsequent sessions:
10th, 17th February; 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st March
(No session 24th February)
All members welcome; any media may be used, help given if required. Good coffee is served at 11am. The fees are the same as last year. £48 for the 8 week term if possible or £9 for any single session.
Bring any materials of your choice including protection for a table and floor if they are messy materials. Tea/coffee served by the centre is not included in the fees.
There are few parking places by the Centre, in Church Street or De La Warr Road. Paid parking is available in the Manor Gardens Car Park (payment by machine (coin), phone or corner shop). Road parking is available in Lychgates Close, north of King Offa Way if you can climb steps and have a head for heights to cross the footbridge over King Offa Way.
Volunteer models always welcome. Please ask your friends if they might like their portraits painted. There is a gift for each model.
Thursday Afternoon Life Group.

Sessions start on Thursday 6th February at 2 pm, subsequent sessions: February 13th and 20th (No session February 27th); March 6th and 13th, 20th and 27th; April 3rd and 10th.
Tea and coffee will be available at break time.
The price will be : £60 for 5 sessions with additional sessions £12 each, or £15 for single sessions.
All BAW members are welcome. There is no tuition, however we are a friendly, informal and supportive group. All of our models are professionals.
We usually start with a series of short poses, then after the break we have either one long or two medium-length poses.

Members can come to work and exhibit in the Education room from 11.00a.m. – 3.30 pm on the second Sunday of the month, from February to December .
Sessions will resume on Sunday February 9th at 11 am. Subsequent dates are: March 9th, April 13th, May 11th, June 8th, July13th, August 10th, September 14th, October 12th, November 9th and December 14th.

Tuesday Afternoon Workshops
2.15 – 4.15 pm at St Stephen’s Church Large Hall, Down Road. Bexhill TN39 4HD.
There will be 8 workshops altogether. The workshops will re-commence on Tuesday February 4th and continue until March 25th .
The price will be £20 for all eight sessions. Alternatively, attendance at any single workshop will be £5.
Tea/coffee and biscuits available free of charge at all Tuesday workshops. Please bring your own mug.
Please bring protective clothing, paper towels, rags, newspaper to cover tables etc as necessary for workshops.
There is a small church car park in Down Road and also parking in Newlands Avenue.
The local bus number 97 from town can deliver you to the top of West Down Road, only 200 yards from the hall for the start time, but there is no bus available for the return. Members with cars are often willing to assist with return journeys.
The nearest bus stop for the 98 bus is in London Road at the junction of London Road and Woodsgate Park, with a ten minute walk to the hall.
February Workshops are:
Week 1. 4th February: Optical illusions with Maggie

We will explore how artists and craftspeople traditionally used optical illusions to create the impression that their work had depth, looking at tricks with lines, tones and colours. We will look at the science behind the development of impressionism
Come and experiment with colour. Maggie can also do a revision, step by step, guide to perspective, indoors and outside, if less experienced members are interested.
Materials: Please bring pencils, thin scrap paper and paper thick enough to paint on, opaque paints, brushes and painting equipment including something to protect the table, rulers, small pointed scissors or a safe craft knife and small cutting board if you have one.
Week 2. 11th February: Op art with Maggie

What happened after impressionism? We will look at Abstraction, flattening pictures and then the deliberate bending of the surface in the optical art of Bridget Riley and Victor Vaserely. Create your own op art works.
Materials: Please bring pencils, rulers, bendy rulers, and any other geometric instruments that you have, paper thick enough to paint on, black opaque paint, coloured opaque paint, brushes and painting equipment including something to protect the table.
Week 3: 18th February: Introduction to Origami with Ineke

We will look at the origin of Origami and with Ineke’s help we will make some folded cranes. If we have time we will also make a folded box
Materials: Please bring some square papers – any paper type will do, but it needs to be ‘easy’ to fold, thin thread and fine sewing needle to string up the finished cranes and tiny beads to stop the cranes sliding down the string. (optional)
Weeks 4 & 5: 25th February & 4th March: Explore Printmaking with Eleanor and Joy

Come and explore a range of printmaking techniques to make a mixed media image.
We will create printed or watercolour backgrounds and overprint with a botanical image.
We will show examples of how to work into your image to create a final piece.
Materials: BAW will provide basic printmaking materials. Please bring a biro or stylus, pencil, rubber and covering to protect the table. Please bring your watercolour equipment and paper if you would like to create your background in watercolour.

SUMMER DRAWING AND PAINTING OUTSIDE
Our Tuesday workshops have, for the summer, become the Tuesday Outdoor Drawing and Painting Sessions.
Join us for the fun and challenge of painting outdoors. We have put together a varied programme for our outdoor drawing and painting sessions this summer. Our venues include private gardens, seascapes, fisherman’s huts and boats, lakes and a walled garden.

SUMMER DRAWING AND PAINTING OUTSIDE
TUESDAY JUNE 3rd 2 – 4pm WYLANDS FARM

Wylands Farm is set in a delightful countryside setting with a woodland trail and lakes. Access the farm via the long drive. The car park is by the café. Some of us will have lunch before the painting session so if you would like to join us please meet at the café at 1pm. If you are coming just for the painting session, please meet by the lake behind the cafe at 2pm. We have been asked to respect the anglers by the lakes and not set up to paint near them.
TUESDAY JUNE 10th 2 – 4pm. GLYNE GAP BEACH

This quiet beach offers a variety of viewpoints. You can see the cliffs towards Galley Hill and there are views across to Eastbourne and Hastings. If there is a low tide, there are rock pools.
Access the beach through the railway tunnel. Please meet by the café on the beach at 2pm. There is a car park. The 99 bus passes Ravenside Shopping Centre on route between Eastbourne via Bexhill town centre to Hastings.
TUESDAY JUNE 17th 2 – 4pm. ASHBURNHAM PLACE
Kitchenham Road, Battle TN33 9NF
Ashburnham Place is a now a Christian conference centre and retreat which opens its grounds to the public. It used to be a large country estate and the parkland, lakes and walled gardens were designed by Capability Brown. There are varied views which offer lots of opportunities for drawing or painting. It also has a wonderful cafe in the orangery. Some of us will have lunch before the painting session so if you would like to join us please meet at the Orangery at 1pm. If you are coming just for the painting session, please meet by the steps near the Orangery at 2pm.

TUESDAY JULY 8th 2 – 4pm HASTINGS OLD TOWN & ROCK-A-NORE BEACH
Rock-a-Nore Road, Hastings TN34 3DW
Hastings Old Town offers a variety of subjects that you could paint. There is a shingle beach with the tall wooden fisherman’s huts and fishing boats, quant houses and the East Cliff Funicular Railway which goes up to Hastings Country Park. The far side of the fishing boats is Rock-a-Nore beach with cliffs rising and at low tide rock pools. There is a car park but you do have to pay. Please meet by the Hastings Contemporary Art Museum.
TUESDAY JULY 15th 2 – 4pm MANOR GARDENS
De La Warr Road, Bexhill Old Town, TN40 2HG
A lovely tranquil garden in the heart of Bexhill’s old town. The garden has lots of flower beds, mature trees, a pond, a walled garden with exotic plants and the ruins of the old 13th century manor house. There are lots of benches around the garden to enjoy the varied views.
There is paid parking in Manor Barn Car Park (exact coins required): Ringo, Cash or pay in the Corner Shop in Church Street. The 99 bus passes the Manor gardens on route between Eastbourne and Hastings. It goes via Bexhill town centre.
TUESDAY JULY 22nd 2 – 4pm. BROAD OAK PARK
Broad Oak Lane, Bexhill-on- Sea, TN39 4HE
The park consists of several meadows with mature trees and small areas of woodland. There is a good view looking towards the Highwoods Golf Club. You can access the free car park nearest to the meadows by tuning off Little Common Road into Broadoak Lane. Take the first left into the park. Drive down the lane, past the allotments and the car park is on your right. Please meet at the picnic bench up the hill from the car park at 2pm.

Into the Woods – Watercolour with Christine

Come and paint silver birch woodland scenes through the seasons. We will look at different techniques to create the trees and woodland backgrounds. Please bring any images from photos or your sketchbooks, some will also be provided
Christine will have examples of her own work, demonstrate various techniques and be there to help you if you are a beginner.
Materials: Please bring your watercolour paints, a medium, small and fine brush, watercolour paper (140lb cold pressed preferable), masking tape, masking fluid + old brush, small sponge and something to protect the table.
Week 3 21st October
Puzzle painting with Jan

Do you enjoy doing puzzles? Well here’s your chance of painting a piece of a famous painting – ‘is it a bird, is it a plane?’ no, and it’s not superman we’ll be painting but it will be a bit of fun. Everyone will be given the same A4 size multi-media board to work on so you can use – watercolour, acrylic, pastels, felt tips and coloured pencils, – it’s your choice.
Materials: Please bring your preferred medium, equipment and something to protect the table.
28th October – No Session.
Directions: The church car park is in Down Road but if full there is parking in Woodsgate Park and Newlands Avenue to the south of the church. The 97 bus from town will drop you nearby if you have no transport, and someone else will run you back to town afterwards.

Week 4 November 4th Creating Masks with Steve

Steve will demonstrate how to make the mask former onto which any features can be added. The
focus will be on animals, but can be adapted for Halloween or Christmas.
Materials: BAW will provide card. Please bring a pencil, scissors, stapler, something to protect the
table and items to decorate the mask- paints, felt tips etc.
Week 5 November 11th Pen and Wash with Tony

The workshop will follow the process of using waterproof ink drawing pens to provide a pen drawing

hoped to address some of the issues that arise with correct perspective as part of the workshop.
Reference photographs will be provided. The techniques involved work very well for quick ‘plein-air’
sketches as well as for the creation of detailed artwork, particularly for architectural subjects.
Materials: Please bring your watercolour paints and equipment, watercolour paper, pencil, rubber,
waterproof drawing pens and something to protect the table.
Week 6 November 18th Autumnal themed still life

We will set up an autumnal still life. Bring your medium of choice to create an autumnal picture of leaves, pumpkins and fruits of the season.
Materials: Please bring your preferred medium and equipment-watercolour, acrylic, pastels etc., and something to protect the table.

All members welcome; any media may be used, help given if required. Good coffee is served at 11am. The fees are : £49 for the 8 week term if possible or £9 for any single session. *
Bring any materials of your choice including protection for a table and floor if they are messy materials. Tea/coffee served by the centre is not included in the fees.
There are few parking places by the Centre, in Church Street or De La Warr Road. Paid parking is available in the Manor Gardens Car Park (payment by machine (coin), phone or corner shop). Road parking is available in Lychgates Close, north of King Offa Way if you can climb steps and have a head for heights to cross the footbridge over King Offa Way.
Volunteer models always welcome. Please ask your friends if they might like their portraits painted. There is a gift for each model.

All BAW members are welcome. There is no tuition, however we are a friendly, informal and supportive group. All of our models are professionals.
We usually start with a series of short poses, then after the break we have either one long or two medium-length poses.
Tables are available. Bring any materials of your choice including protection for a table and floor if they are messy materials. For parking please see the Portrait Group ‘details’ entry (above).
