General Information

New members please note that you pay the leader at the first session of an activity, or if you make a single attendance, you are not required to pay in advance.

Please take newspaper or a plastic sheet to protect tables and your own cleansing materials to all practical indoor sessions. No litter may be left at any venue but must be taken home.

February 2025

Monday Morning Portrait/Figure Drawing and Painting

10 – 12 am, St Peter’s Community Centre, Church Street, Old Town, TN40 2HE.

The 8 week term will resume on Monday 3rd February at 10.00 a.m, subsequent sessions:
10th, 17th February; 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st March
(No session 24th February)

All members welcome; any media may be used, help given if required. Good coffee is served at 11am. The fees are the same as last year. £48 for the 8 week term if possible or £9 for any single session.

Bring any materials of your choice including protection for a table and floor if they are messy materials. Tea/coffee served by the centre is not included in the fees.

There are few parking places by the Centre, in Church Street or De La Warr Road. Paid parking is available in the Manor Gardens Car Park (payment by machine (coin), phone or corner shop).  Road parking is available in Lychgates Close, north of King Offa Way if you can climb steps and have a head for heights to cross the footbridge over King Offa Way.

Volunteer models always welcome. Please ask your friends if they might like their portraits painted. There is a gift for each model.

Thursday Afternoon Life Group.

2 – 4 pm, St Peter’s Community Centre, Church Street, Old Town, TN40 2HE.

(in the Bell Room at the rear of the Centre)

Sessions start on Thursday 6th February at 2 pm, subsequent sessions: February 13th and 20th (No session February 27th); March 6th and 13th, 20th and 27th; April 3rd and 10th.

Tea and coffee will be available at break time.

The price will be : £60 for 5 sessions with additional sessions £12 each, or £15 for single sessions.

All BAW members are welcome.  There is no tuition, however we are a friendly, informal and supportive group.  All of our models are professionals.

We usually start with a series of short poses, then after the break we have either one long or two medium-length poses.

Tables are available.  Bring any materials of your choice including protection for a table and floor if they are messy materials. For parking please see the Portrait Group entry (above).

Open Studio Working at Bexhill Museum – second Sunday of each month.

11am – 3.30 pm, at the Education Room of the Museum.

Members can come to work and exhibit in the Education room from 11.00a.m. – 3.30 pm on the second Sunday of the month, from February to December .

Sessions will resume on Sunday February 9th at 11 am. Subsequent dates are: March 9th,  April 13th,  May 11th,  June 8th,  July13th,  August 10th, September 14th,  October 12th,  November 9th  and December 14th.

We will have access from 10.30am in order to set up.

The price is £5.00 per session which includes tea/coffee and biscuits but please bring your own lunch.

Tuesday Afternoon Workshops

2.15 – 4.15 pm at St Stephen’s Church Large Hall, Down Road. Bexhill TN39 4HD.

There will be 8 workshops altogether. The workshops will re-commence on Tuesday February 4th and continue until March 25th .

The price will be £20 for all eight sessions. Alternatively, attendance at any single workshop will be £5.

Tea/coffee and biscuits available free of charge at all Tuesday workshops. Please bring your own mug.

Please bring protective clothing, paper towels, rags, newspaper to cover tables etc as necessary for  workshops.

There is a small church car park in Down Road and also parking in Newlands Avenue.

The local bus number 97 from town can deliver you to the top of West Down Road, only 200 yards from the hall for the start time, but there is no bus available for the return. Members with cars are often willing to assist with return journeys.

The nearest bus stop for the 98 bus is in London Road at the junction of London Road and Woodsgate Park, with a ten minute walk to the hall.

February Workshops are:

Week 1. 4th February: Optical illusions with Maggie

We will explore how artists and craftspeople traditionally used optical illusions to create the impression that their work had depth, looking at tricks with lines, tones and colours. We will look at the science behind the development of impressionism
Come and experiment with colour. Maggie can also do a revision, step by step, guide to perspective, indoors and outside, if less experienced members are interested.
Materials: Please bring pencils, thin scrap paper and paper thick enough to paint on, opaque paints, brushes and painting equipment including something to protect the table, rulers, small pointed scissors or a safe craft knife and small cutting board if you have one.

Week 2. 11th February: Op art with Maggie

What happened after impressionism? We will look at Abstraction, flattening pictures and then the deliberate bending of the surface in the optical art of Bridget Riley and Victor Vaserely. Create your own op art works.
Materials: Please bring pencils, rulers, bendy rulers, and any other geometric instruments that you have, paper thick enough to paint on, black opaque paint, coloured opaque paint, brushes and painting equipment including something to protect the table.

Week 3: 18th February: Introduction to Origami with Ineke

We will look at the origin of Origami and with Ineke’s help we will make some folded cranes. If we have time we will also make a folded box
Materials: Please bring some square papers – any paper type will do, but it needs to be ‘easy’ to fold, thin thread and fine sewing needle to string up the finished cranes and tiny beads to stop the cranes sliding down the string. (optional)

Weeks 4 & 5: 25th February & 4th March: Explore Printmaking with Eleanor and Joy

Come and explore a range of printmaking techniques to make a mixed media image.
We will create printed or watercolour backgrounds and overprint with a botanical image.
We will show examples of how to work into your image to create a final piece.
Materials: BAW will provide basic printmaking materials. Please bring a biro or stylus, pencil, rubber and covering to protect the table. Please bring your watercolour equipment and paper if you would like to create your background in watercolour.


March 2025

Come and explore a range of printmaking techniques to make a mixed media image.

We will create printed or watercolour backgrounds and overprint with a botanical image.

We will show examples of how to work into your image to create a final piece.

Come and paint a landscape in watercolour. Please bring any images from photos or your sketchbooks

Weeks 7 & 8: 18th & 25th March: Spring decorations with Judith

We will make decorations using felt, embroidery and beading

Materials: Please bring a pencil, small scissors, sewing thread and needle

BAW will provide materials but if you would like to use your own felt, embroidery threads and beads please bring them.
