General Information

New members please note that you pay the leader at the first session of an activity, or if you make a single attendance, you are not required to pay in advance.

Please take newspaper or a plastic sheet to protect tables and your own cleansing materials to all practical indoor sessions. No litter may be left at any venue but must be taken home.

Monday Morning Portrait/Figure Drawing and Painting

10 – 12 mid-day, St Peter’s Community Centre, Church Street, Old Town, TN40 2HE.

The 8 week term will resume on Monday 2nd February at 10.00 a.m, subsequent sessions:
9th, 16th February; 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th March
(No session 23rd February)

All members welcome; any media may be used, help given if required. Good coffee is served at 11am. The fees are the same as last year. £48 for the 8 week term if possible or £9 for any single session.

Any media may be used, help is offered if required, coffee is served at 11 during a rest for the model. Bring any materials of your choice including protection for a table and floor if they are messy materials. Tea/coffee served by the centre is not included in the fees..

Parking. There are a few parking places by the Centre, in Church Street or De La Warr Road. Paid parking is available in the Manor Gardens Car Park (payment by machine (coin), phone or corner shop).  Road parking is available in Lychgates Close, north of King Offa Way if you can climb steps and have a head for heights to cross the footbridge over King Offa Way.

Volunteer models always welcome. Please ask your friends if they might like their portraits painted. There is a gift for each model.

Thursday Morning Life Group.

10 – 12 mid-day, St Peter’s Community Centre, Church Street, Old Town, TN40 2HE.

The Group will re-start with a Life Workshop on Tuesday 17th February at St. Stephen’s Large Hall 2:15- 4:15, led by Margaret Carpenter. Please see the Workshops entry (below) for more details.

We are following the workshop with a series of five of our ‘normal’ (untutored) sessions, at St. Peter’s Community Centre, Church Street, Bexhill Old Town, TN40 2HE. We have shifted the time to Thursday mornings, 10 am ‘till 12 noon, dates starting 26th February and continuing 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th March.

Tea and coffee will be available at break time.

The price will be : £60 for 5 sessions, or £15 for single sessions.

All BAW members are welcome.  There is no tuition, however we are a friendly, informal and supportive group.  All of our models are professionals.

We usually start with a series of short poses, then after the break we have either one long or two medium-length poses.

Tables are available.  Bring any materials of your choice including protection for a table and floor if they are messy materials. For parking please see the Portrait Group entry (above).

Open Studio Working at Bexhill Museum – second Sunday of each month.

11am – 3.30 pm, at the Education Room of the Museum.

We are booked in for another year of monthly Open Studios at Bexhill Museum. Members can come to work and exhibit in the Education room at the Museum on the second Sunday of the month from February to December. BAW provides coffee/tea and biscuits but members need to bring their own lunch please.

Sessions will resume on Sunday February 8th at 11 am. Subsequent dates are: March 8th,  April 12th,  May 10th,  June 14th,  July12th,  August 9th, September 13th,  October 11th,  November 8th  and December 13th.

We will have access from 10.30am in order to set up.

The price is £5.00 per session which includes tea/coffee and biscuits but please bring your own lunch.

Places are limited so please call Elaine on 01424 846477 to book a space.  If you are then unable to come please let Elaine know as soon as possible so that she can offer the place to somebody else.

We are always pleased to see members come and join us at the Open Studio and welcome members who just drop in to see us too.

Tuesday Afternoon Workshops

2.15 – 4.15 pm at St Stephen’s Church Large Hall, Down Road. Bexhill TN39 4HD.

There will be 8 workshops altogether. The workshops will re-commence on Tuesday February 3rd and continue until March 24th.

The price will be £20 for all eight sessions. Alternatively, attendance at any single workshop will be £5.

We hope that the content of our Tuesday afternoon workshops will appeal to all levels of experience and skill. The sessions are an opportunity to meet others, share expertise and enjoy working together. If you are a beginner don’t be afraid to come along and have a go as there will be guidance and support.
Each session will have a theme but you are welcome to come along and work on your own project if you prefer.
Coffee, tea and biscuits are provided free but please bring your own mug.

Please bring protective clothing, paper towels, rags, newspaper to cover tables etc as necessary for  workshops.

There is a small church car park in Down Road and also parking in Newlands Avenue.

The local bus number 97 from town can deliver you to the top of West Down Road, only 200 yards from the hall for the start time, but there is no bus available for the return. Members with cars are often willing to assist with return journeys.

The nearest bus stop for the 98 bus is in London Road at the junction of London Road and Woodsgate Park, with a ten minute walk to the hall.

February Workshops are:

Week 1. 3rd February: A winter themed still life

This session will be an untutored seasonal themed still life.
Materials: Please bring your medium of choice, something to protect the table, plus a large sketchbook, paper or collage materials, to create an inspired picture of the season.

Week 2. 10th February: Macramé with Rachel

A craft to really get the fingers (and brains!) working, Rachel will guide you in making a Valentine themed hanging for you to take home. Please bring a ruler and scissors. Other materials will be provided.

Week 3: 17th February: Introduction to Life Drawing with Maggie

Drawing from life may seem intimidating, but is great for your brain – drawing from a model, looking at proportion and the human form. Anyone can come and have a go.
Materials: Please bring about four or five of the largest bits of paper you have, any paper, brown wrapping paper, flat wallpaper, sugar paper or cartridge paper. You will need a big bit of board or cardboard to support the big paper. I will bring as many boards as I can. Bring easels if you want to stand up to work. Bring soft spreadable charcoal, pastels, or very soft pencils to work quickly and boldly. This will not be about creating a masterpiece but having fun and gaining confidence. PS you will need hand cleaning wipes/ rag /tissues before tea time and afterwards!!

Week 4: 24th February: Ink and Watercolour Painting with Tony

Continuing Tony’s successful architecture line and wash workshop from last term, please bring with you a rough pencil sketch of the building or scene that you wish to portray and Tony will help you build this into a pen and ink drawing, followed by watercolour washes on top.
Materials: Please bring watercolour paints and any waterproof pens, together with your prepared sketch.

Weeks 5 & 6: March 3rd and March 10th: Creative Book Art with Dory

If you can fold a piece of paper, you can join us! Transform plain paper into layered, twisty pieces of art. Drawing, painting, collage, and different formats can be used. We will make a simple concertina book, using a visual narrative guided by your interests. Unsuccessful, reusable artwork of your own could be used.
Materials: Please bring: Large (A3) thickish paper, thin card, bone folder or teaspoon, ruler, craft knife and scissors, collage materials, felt tip pens, glue stick and cardboard for cutting on.

Weeks 7 & 8: Mar 17th and 24th: Sketchbooks with Michael

In preparation for a spring and summer full of outdoor painting we will look at the different ways artists use sketchbooks. In session 1, Please bring any sketchbooks which you have, from the past and your current one. Bring pencils, pens, watercolours and something to protect the table. Michael will share his hints and tips for using a sketchbook to record, and, as a future resource for your art practice. Week 2: Please bring the same equipment and we will develop and discuss this method of working.
